This story about her is the kind of thing you don't hear much on the radio anymore. It's not exactly a narrative, there's no news peg, it's just a portrait of a person. It's Elizabeth Chur's first piece since getting out of school. She spent a lot of time on it, gathering 35 hours of tape for a twelve-minute portrait. Like Melodie, she had a hard time letting it go. These are efforts worth knowing about. /p ul li a href="http://www.transom.org/shows/2006/200606_after_the_dumpster/audio/after_the_dum pster.mp3" target="_blank"Download the MP3/a/li li a href="http://www.transom.org/shows/2006/200606_after_the_dumpster/audio/after_the_dum pster.m3u" target="_blank"Stream the MP3/a/li li a href="http://www.transom.org/shows/2006/200606_after_the_dumpster/" target="_blank"Visit this Feature Page/a/li li a href="http://talk.transom.org/Shows/78" target="_blank"Discuss this Feature in TALK/a/li /ul
MP3 Thursday: Universal Hall Pass

pimg src="http://www.leliathomas.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/universalhallpass.jpg" alt="Universal Hall Pass" class="floatright" /Been a while since I#8217;ve written one of these, as I#8217;ve had difficulty finding good, unknown music; I#8217;ve also been busy. But here#8217;s a real gem, a href="http://www.universalhallpass.com/" title="UHP Official Website"Universal Hall Pass/a. Hailing from Atwater Village, California, Universal Hall Pass is refreshingly original sounding. The band features the vocals of Melissa R. Kaplan, formerly of Boston#8217;s popular electronic pop group Splashdown. I really like Kaplan#8217;s voice. It is the right balance of crystal clear pop and ethereal electronica. You#8217;ll find the tunes sink in, inspire and become a part of you./p pAnyone who likes fusion styles in music will like Universal Hall Pass, which manages to sound pop-like, ethereally electronic, and typically with other musical styles, such as jazz, world, or folk. Universal Hall Pass has one diverse sound, and I like it. Listeners of a href="http://www.george.net.au"George/a, a href="http://www.toriamos.com"Tori Amos/a and perhaps even a href="http://www.bjork.com"Bjork/a will probably like Universal Hall Pass./p h3Download Information/h3 pYou can download three tracks by Universal Hall Pass./p ul lia href="http://www.garageband.com/song?|pe1|S8LTM0LdsaSkZle0Z2s" title="Download from GarageBand"Dragonfly/a (Personal favorite!)/li lia href="http://www.universalhallpass.com/mp3/mp3/Misdirected_UPH.mp3" title="Download from UHP Website"Misdirected/a/li lia href="http://www.universalhallpass.com/music/01%20Ring%20of%20Fire%201.mp3" title="Download from UHP Website"Ring of Fire/a (Definitely the most unique cover of this song that I#8217;ve heard.)/li /ul h3Support Universal Hall Pass/h3 pYou can support Universal Hall Pass by visiting a href="http://www.garageband.com/artist/universalhallpass_1"their GarageBand page/a and a href="http://universalhallpass.com/"official website/a. CMapServers are running around the world for accessing, publishing and collaborating in building Concept Maps. CMapTools, use of which can promote the development of high-order thinking skills, is a stand-alone application for developing Concept Maps that can be published to a CMapServer. These Concept Maps are capable of containing concept text and relationships, as well as rich multimedia elements and hyperlinks to other resources to support and inform the map. /p pstrongPresentation/strongbr / emiPod ready/embr /a href="http://k12online.wm.edu/cmap-server.mp4"http://k12online.wm.edu/cmap-server.mp4 /abr / a href="http://k12online.wm.edu/cmap-tools-iPod.mp4"http://k12online.wm.edu/cmap-tools- iPod.mp4/abr /emOriginal/embr /a href="http://k12online.wm.edu/introduction.ogg"http://k12online.wm.edu/introduction.o gg/abr / a href="http://k12online.wm.edu/rationale.ogg"http://k12online.wm.edu/rationale.ogg/abr / a href="http://k12online.wm.edu/cmap-server-orig.mp4"http://k12online.wm.edu/cmap-serve r-orig.mp4/abr / a href="http://k12online.wm.edu/cmap-tools-full.divx"http://k12online.wm.edu/cmap-tools -full.divx/abr / a href="http://k12online.wm.edu/cmap-tools.divx"http://k12online.wm.edu/cmap-tools.divx /abr / emAudio only/embr /a href="http://k12online.wm.edu/introduction.mp3"http://k12online.wm.edu/introduction.m p3/abr / a href="http://k12online.wm.edu/rationale.mp3"http://k12online.wm.edu/rationale.mp3/abr / a href="http://k12online.wm.edu/cmap-server.mp3"http://k12online.wm.edu/cmap-server.mp3 /a p strongSupporting Links/strongbr / Concept Map Theorybr /a href="http://cmap.ihmc.us/Publications/ResearchPapers/TheoryCmaps/TheoryUnderlyingCon ceptMaps.htm"http://cmap.ihmc.us/Publications/ResearchPapers/TheoryCmaps/TheoryUnderl yingConceptMaps.htm/a p Concept Map White Papersbr /a href="http://cmap.ihmc.us/Documentation/WhitePapers.php"http://cmap.ihmc.us/Documenta tion/WhitePapers.php/a p Concept Map Documentationbr //aa href="http://cmap.ihmc.us/Documentation/"http://cmap.ihmc.us/Documentation//a p Concept Map Research and Publicationsbr //aa href="http://cmap.ihmc.us/Publications/"http://cmap.ihmc.us/Publications//a p CMap FAQsbr / a href="http://cmap.ihmc.us/Support/FAQs.php"http://cmap.ihmc.us/Support/FAQs.php/a pCMap Helpbr /a href="http://cmap.ihmc.us/Support/Help/"http://cmap.ihmc.us/Support/Help//a p CMap Supportbr /a href="http://cmap.ihmc.us/Support/"http://cmap.ihmc.us/Support//a/p pa href="http://takemyhand07.wikispaces.com"smallWhat is #8220;Take My Hand#8221;?/abr / a href="http://takemyhand07.wikispaces.com/nt10"small#8220;Take My Hand#8221;/a/p p a href="http://k12onlinehelpdesk.pbwiki.com/"smallAccess Help Desk/a /p pTechnorati Tags: a href="http://technorati.com/tag/k12online07nt10" rel="tag"k12online07nt10/a, a href="http://technorati.com/tag/k12online07" rel="tag" k12online07/a/p
Documenting our conference podcasting efforts at Community 2.0

pimg src="http://bryanperson.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/c20-logo.jpg" alt="Community 2.0 logo" height="96" width="450" //p p class="MsoNormal"At the a href="http://www.iirusa.com/community/event-overview.xml"Community 2.0 Conference/a in Las Vegas last month, I joined forces with a href="http://www.mzinga.com/jim"Jim Storer/a and a href="http://www.mzinga.com/aaron"Aaron Strout/a from a href="http://www.mzinga.com/"Mzinga/a (disclosure: my employer, Monster, is a Mzinga client) in recording and producing a series of podcast conversations with some of the event’s presenters and attendees./p p class="MsoNormal"I wanted to share some of the details behind our work./p p class="MsoNormal"strongspan class="sub"THE TOOLSo:p /o:p/span/strong/p ul style="margin-top: 0in" type="disc" li class="MsoNormal"strongRecording. /strongWe used the a href="http://www.samsontech.com/products/productpage.cfm?prodID=1916"Zoom H2/a, which can capture and split the audio of the interviewer(s) and guest(s) into separate audio channels (something that can really in handy as you’re editing). It also multiple options for pickup patterns and can record in both .wav and .mp3 formats. The user interface is reasonably intuitive, too. And if looks matter, the H2 ain’t nearly as hideous as its slightly more upscale uncle, the a href="http://www.samsontech.com/products/productpage.cfm?prodID=1901"Zoom H4/a. pstrongo:p/o:p/strong/li li class="MsoNormal"strongEditing. /strongI went with a href="http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/"Audacity/a, which is a free download and install for both Windows and Mac machines. I’ve produced more than 100 podcasts over the past two-plus years, and Audacity has been my editing tool of choice on all but one of those episodes. It’s easy to use, seldom fails, and enables me to edit and publish podcasts quickly – which was important for this conference.br / strong /strongbr / o:p/o:p/li li class="MsoNormal"strongFile storage/strong. We used both Mzinga’s servers and a href="http://www.libsyn.com/i"Libsyn/a, which charges a monthly storage fee but allows for unlimited downloads of your content (I pay $10/month for up to 250 MB of new audio files).strong /strong po:p/o:p/li li class="MsoNormal"strongThe blog. /strongOur podcasts files were embedded into posts on the a href="http://community20.blogspot.com/"Community 2.0 blog/a, which runs on the Blogger platform and was launched a couple of months prior to the conference.strong /strong po:p/o:p/li li class="MsoNormal"strongThe audio player/strong. We used the Flash-based a href="http://www.1pixelout.net/code/audio-player-wordpress-plugin/"audio player from One Pixel Out/a. You’ll see a version of that player on many sites and WordPress blogs, including a href="http://bryanperson.com/"mine/a. There’s really no reason not to use Flash-based audio players, as they make streaming a podcast episode from within a web page drop-dead easy.strongo:pbr / /o:p/strong/li /ul p class="MsoNormal"strongspan class="sub"BEST PRACTICESo:p /o:p/span/strong/p ul style="margin-top: 0in" type="disc" li class="MsoNormal"strongDivide and conquer. /strongIf you’re one just one person trying to chase down guests, interview, edit, add show notes and mp3 tags, upload, publish with an associated blog post, and attend some of the actual conference sessions so that you have good material for your interviews, you’re going to be in for one heckuva challenge. Fortunately, we were three. Jim, Aaron, and I split the duties at C20 – they conducted more of the interviews; I did the bulk of the editing in Audacity; and we shared the blogging responsibilities.br / !--[if !supportLineBreakNewLine]--br / !--[endif]--strongo:p/o:p/strong/li li class="MsoNormal"strongCheck the acoustics. /strongI’m not a sound engineer, but I do know that some settings are better for recording than others. In one interview we conducted, for example, the muzak from an empty conference room came through louder than we had anticipated. Run some simulated sound checks in a few different spaces before you record for real.br / !--[if !supportLineBreakNewLine]--br / !--[endif]--strongo:p/o:p/strong/li li class="MsoNormal"strongPrepare the bookends. /strongTo save yourself loads of editing time at the conference – when you likely won’t have time to spare – you should pre-produce a generic intro and outro that you can dump into your audio editor and wrap around each podcast interview or segment. Here are the audio files I used, which feature music purchased and cleared for podcasts through a href="http://shockwave-sound.com/"Shockwave-Sound/a: 1) a href="http://media.libsyn.com/media/newcommroad/C20-IntroMix.wav"C20 intro/a 2) a href="http://media.libsyn.com/media/newcommroad/C20-OutroMix.wav"C20 outro/a (note: these link to .wav files).br / !--[if !supportLineBreakNewLine]--br / !--[endif]--strongo:p/o:p/strong/li li class="MsoNormal"strongHave a real plan./strong How do you intend to distribute and publicize the podcasts, and how will you use the content emafter /emthe conference, if at all? These are important questions to ask and answer long before you ever hit the record button with your first guest on the conference floor. Why? Because your answers will influence the format, tone and length of the podcasts; the potential impact of the long tail; the types of questions you’ll ask during interviews; and the level of satisfaction your listeners are likely to have. After all, publishing a quick-hit podcast that announces time changes or a bonus presentation during the opening day of the conference is helpful, as long as the attendees can find and listen to that content on your website or blog (or in iTunes) in a timely fashion. Listening to that same podcast three months later on a post-conference CD, on the other hand, wouldn’t be useful at all. But, you know what emwould/em be of value for participants on that same CD? An interview with the conference chair about possible themes for the following year’s event. (Check out a a href="http://au.autodesk.com/blogs/view/What_will_be_AU2008_theme/"conference podcast from st1:place w:st="on"st1:placename w:st="on"Autodesk/st1:placename st1:placetype w:st="on"University/st1:placetype/st1:place/a that does something similar.)strongo:p/o:p/strong/li /ul p class="MsoNormal"strongspan class="sub"IN THE END #8230;o:p/o:p/span/strong/p p class="MsoNormal"#8230; our download numbers aren’t very large, and that’s very much because there was very little promotion of our podcasting plans – or of the C20 blog itself, for that matter – leading up to or during the conference. But because this was more of a proof of concept on the content and marketing side, we’re OK with that. We can do a better job of laying the groundwork next year./p p class="MsoNormal"And as for the conversations themselves, I think they came out well and included a compelling mix of speakers, thinkers, and conference goers alike. You can have a listen yourself via the links below and let me know if you agree:o:p /o:p/p ul style="margin-top: 0in" type="disc" li class="MsoNormal"span lang="FR"a href="http://www.mzinga.com/media/podcasts/Rachel_Happe_C20.mp3"Rachel Happe, IDC/a o:p/o:p/span/li li class="MsoNormal"a href="http://www.mzinga.com/media/podcasts/Tony_Hsieh_C20.mp3"Zappos CEO, Tony Hsieh/a/li li class="MsoNormal"a href="http://www.mzinga.com/media/podcasts/Makool_Warburton_C20.mp3"Rachel Makool (eBay) and Matt Warburton (Yahoo)/a/li li class="MsoNormal"a href="http://www.mzinga.com/media/podcasts/Dawn_Lacallade_C20.mp3"Dawn Lacallade, Dell/aspan /span/li li class="MsoNormal"a href="http://www.mzinga.com/media/podcasts/David_Weinberger_C20.mp3"David Weinberger, author and Harvard Berkman fellow/aa href="http://www.mzinga.com/media/podcasts/David_Weinberger_C20.mp3"br / /a/li li class="MsoNormal"span lang="FR"a href="http://www.mzinga.com/media/podcasts/Charlene_Li_C20.mp3"Charlene Li, Forrester Research/a o:p/o:p/span/li li class="MsoNormal"a href="http://www.mzinga.com/media/podcasts/Bill_Johnston_C20.mp3"Bill Johnston, Forum One Communications/a/li li class="MsoNormal"a href="http://media.libsyn.com/media/newcommroad/Betty_Sanchez_C20.mp3"Betty Sanchez, social media consultant/a/li li class="MsoNormal"a href="http://media.libsyn.com/media/newcommroad/Melany_Gallant_C20.mp3"Melany Gallant, Ramius Corporation/a/li li class="MsoNormal"a href="http://media.libsyn.com/media/newcommroad/Dan_Neely_C20.mp3"Dan Neely, Networked Insights/a/li /ul pspan style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman'"a href="http://media.libsyn.com/media/newcommroad/Dan_Neely_C20.mp3"/a /span/p p class="akst_link"a href="http://bryanperson.com/?p=33amp;akst_action=share-this" title="E-mail this, post to del.icio.us, etc." id="akst_link_33" class="akst_share_link" rel="nofollow"Share This/a /pdiv class="feedflare" a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/BryanPerson?a=P9Bw3I"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/BryanPerson?i=P9Bw3I" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/BryanPerson?a=V77Uwi"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/BryanPerson?i=V77Uwi" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/BryanPerson?a=cwjYWi"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/BryanPerson?i=cwjYWi" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/BryanPerson?a=FqmC9i"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/BryanPerson?i=FqmC9i" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/BryanPerson?a=IlETYI"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/BryanPerson?i=IlETYI" border="0"/img/a /divimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/BryanPerson/~4/304678218" height="1" width="1"/img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Brypercom/~4/304678222" height="1" width="1"/

If not, don't worry about it. ;-) VISIT THIS ARTIST AT NARPHONAX.COM In the works for over half a year, this includes some of artist/samplist John Holowach's best work: 01.Twelve Again: A soft, spoken-word introduction to the album, setting the mood for the varying themes of love and lust that puncture the rest of it. 02.The First Step of a Long Journey: Gradual slope up of music to allow the ears to adjust. Dashes of high-speed chimes and piano dot the landscape. 03.It Equals 21: What equals 21? I'll give you an increasing number of hints: (1) It's three numbers added together ... (2) One of the numbers is 9 ... (3) It's a date ... (4) The other two numbers are single and double-digit, respectively ... (4) 09-11-01 04.Run It: A fun, DJ-centric piece with a variety of vox samples giving a strong vocal backdrop to it. 05.Chillbilly: Ambient meets trip-hop in this gliding, graceful work. 06.Clubbed to Life: A personal club-dedication song to Rob Dougan, featuring samples from Scott Waddell. 07.Endless Lasting Brilliance: Weird, whispering work. 08.Particles: Guitar-backed chill-out with a thumping beat and diverse sound offerings. 09.Inside: Dirty, sinister, and nasty. This peers into the world of lust in the mind of us all. 10.Behind My Eyes: A dark rap, featuring the vocals stylings of J.Lang, G' Wills Nails 11.Sand Trap: Recalls an arabian sunset, with humvees riding across the horizon. 12.Two Sides: An entertaining mish-mash of a Colin Mutchler acapella and Brad Sucks' demo, the layered and rearranged lyrics analogize the fact that there are more than "two sides" to a relationship. 13.Struck: Gentle and moody, layered whispery vocals back this tale of sadness and longing for a distant lover. 14.I Want Your Body: A strong counterpoint to the previous song, this is a club anthem with only one thing on its mind. 15.The Walkin' Song: More sexuality, but mixed in with a confidence in oneself. 16.You're Next in Line: Long, drifting ambient piece. 17.Clubbed to Life (Driveby Mix): A slower, darker version of the Scott Waddell-sampled club song. All samples used are included in the metadata. Cover by: Danny James

Deviant Sex At LimmudLA

Listen
pa href="http://lukeford.net/blog/?p=2267"My full report on LimmudLA/a./p pSunday. 10 a.m. Rabbi Chaim Seidler-Feller and his sex therapist wife Doreen hold what they say is their first joint session in a quarter century. It#8217;s about deviant sex and it#8217;s filled with pages from the Talmud and the Kitzur Shulchan Aruch./p pa href="http://www.lukeford.net/Images/photos/sextalk.wav"Audio/a/p pThe room is jammed with about 150 Jews./p pDoreen#8217;s practice is filled with Orthodox Jews. One woman came to her because she and her husband had been unable to consummate their marriage. Doreen introduced her to dildos. The wife learned to penetrate herself. Doreen told her to have her husband watch. The couple said no because then their children would be born deformed./p pWe study the Talmudic texts which say that if a man looks at that place, his children will be born deformed./p pFrom a href="http://www.edah.org/febbios.htm"Edah.org/a:/p blockquotepstrongRabbi Chaim Seidler-Feller/strong is in his twenty-seventh year at UCLA Hillel as director. He previously served as Hillel Director at Ohio State and as Rabbi of Congregation Ahavat Achim, New Bedford, Massachusetts. He was ordained in 1971 at Yeshiva University where he also earned a Masters Degree in Rabbinic Literature. Rabbi Seidler-Feller is a lecturer in the Departments of Sociology and Near Eastern Languages and Cultures at UCLA where he teaches courses on the ldquo;Jewish Experience in Contemporary Americardquo;, on the ldquo;Social, Cultural, and Religious Institutions of Judaismrdquo; and on ldquo;Philosophers and Mysticsrdquo;. He serves on the Governing Council of the Progressive Jewish Alliance, on the Advisory Council of EDAH, a voice of Modern Orthodoxy and is a founding member of Americans for Peace Now. Chaim is the founder of the Streisand Center for Jewish Cultural Arts at UCLA Hillel and was a rabbinic consultant to Barbara Streisand during the making of the film Yentl. Chaim is the recipient of the Youth Education Stairways (YES) Award as exemplary clergyman in recognition of these efforts. He is married to Dr. Doreen Siedler-Feller and is the father of Shulie and Shaul./p pstrongDr. Doreen Seidler-Feller /strongis currently a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at UCLA Medical School where her responsibilities include supervising residents and interns and teaching third-year medical students selected topics in the psychology of doctoring. She also has a private practice of Clinical Psychology. Dr. Seidler-Feller received her MA in Clinical Psychology in 1973 from The Ohio State University and went on to receive her PhD in Clinical Psychology in 1980. For five years, she was an assistant professor at California State University and for four years, she lectured in Psychology at The Ohio State University. From 1968-1969, she was teaching associate and taught in conjunction with playwright Arthur Sainer./p /blockquote pa href="http://masteragenda.com/cs/lla08/ps/451"Here is how the class is described at limmudla.org/a:/p blockquote pSexual Repression and Obsession in Traditional Jewish Practice: The Case of the Kitzur Shulhan Arukh/p pAlthough the Jewish tradition is generally open-minded regarding sexual behavior within marriage, certain repressive ideas have gained currency over the centuries and have determined sexual attitudes within elements of the Orthodox community. The claim of this workshop is that the Kitzur Shulhan Arukh, a popular 19th century halakhic work read broadly by Yeshiva High School students, is largely responsible for the dissemination of these ideas. Among the issues to be discussed will be masturbation, tzniut in dress and modesty in sexual intercourse. We will read the texts, explore the origins of these teachings, look at alternative sources, and discuss the psychological impact of these prohibitions and inhibitions./p /blockquote pDoreen: quot;In the course of working with her, I had brought her to the point where she was comfortably able to insert a dildo, which she acquired from me, dildos of various sizes, as a bridge to working with her partner. I told her to ask her husband to look at what you are doing so that he can orient himself.quot;/p pquot; She came back to me the next week and she said to me, #8216;He can not look there. It is not allowed. If he looks there, my children will be blind and disabled.#8217;quot;/p pquot;I was shocked by that. I don#8217;t like to give people prescriptions they can#8217;t follow. I don#8217;t want to injure them. I don#8217;t want to be insensitive. That#8217;s the basis for this study session because I was at a loss to understand what she was talking about.quot;/p pRabbi Seidler-Feller: quot; When I was at yeshiva high school, the only source of information we had on sex was the kitzur Shulchan Aruch#8230; Once in a while we#8217;d have a rabbi who#8217;d say things like, #8216;Keep your hands out of your pockets.#8217;/p pquot; There was a whole mode of transmission that was allusive and suggestive but nobody talked directly to us so the boys looked in the book. Over the years, I thought, how damaging.quot;/p pquot;I went on the YU tour of 1964 and Rabbi Shlomo Riskin was our tour guide and all these guides, me too, had these private sessions with Rabbi Riskin. You could talk openly with Rabbi Riskin.quot;/p pquot;Rabbi Shlomo Ganzfried (author of the Kitzur Shulchan Aruch) was Hungarian#8230; That reinforces those who of us who have particular prejudices [about Hungarian Jews].quot;/p pWidespread laughter./p pquot;I lived in Borough Park. I was surrounded by Hungarian Jews.quot;/p pA man in the audience tells Doreen that men are dogs and fixated on sex./p pDoreen: quot; Why? Because sex serves a wide range of functions for you, not only those connected to being a dog, but to being intimate with another human being, succulence, nurturing#8230; You#8217;re being reductionist to the point of absurdity. We have to think more broadly about male sexual desire#8230; [The Talmudic sex ethic] depends on a mechanical construction of the model of a man.quot;/p pRabbi Chaim: quot; How can we as religious people deal with lust? Shouldn#8217;t the holy person be clear of all lust?quot;/p pquot;I see young students who are becoming more religious. They don#8217;t read the Rambam. Shrouded in the Symbiotic Mystery of Timelessness and Romanticism

Throughout a career that spanned sixty-five years Sudek not only showed a devoted persistence to wait for that rare instant when poetry would reveal itself but also possessed an artistic vision and ability to capture it with unrivalled romantic lyricism. Regarded as one of the masters of photography in the twentieth century and aptly named the “Poet of Prague”, Sudek managed to convey the spirit of his beloved city and its timeless romance and grandeur like no one else. The symbiotic relationship between light and shadow fascinated him and would characterize his work throughout his career, often resulting in images that showed a rich diversity of shadow tonalities and light as being an almost physical presence in his photographs. Photography however wasn’t his initial destination until losing his right arm in World War I. As a bookbinder’s apprentice Sudek already was a keen amateur photographer when he was called up for military service in 1915, but losing his arm and thus not being able to devote his life to bookbinding forced him to look for a different profession. Back in Prague he met Jaromir Funke, an abstract photographer, and finally became a professional photographer himself./p p align="center"emEverything around us, dead or alive, in the eyes of a crazy photographer mysteriously takes on many variations, so that a seemingly dead object comes to life through light or by its surrounding. And if the photographer has a bit of sense in his head maybe he is able to capture some of this – and I suppose that’s lyricism./em/p p align="right"~ Josef Sudek ~/p pIn 1924 Sudek was commissioned to photograph the reconstruction of the St. Vitus Cathedral. The subsequent four years Sudek would spend endless amount of time exploring and studying the cathedral, trying to reveal all its details and secrets with painstaking thoroughness of which we see two breathtaking examples above and below. This photographic series shows the dusty gloom of the cathedral brushed by streams of sunlight falling in through the windows and penetrating the medieval interior, shrouding the cathedral in romanticism and spirituality. Each photograph is carefully composed based on comprehensive sketches and his detailed knowledge of the cathedral. One of his apprentices once noted how the photographer exactly knew on which day of the year the light would pour through the windows at his desired angle for him to make his intended photograph./p p align="center"img src="http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p298/Bubbachups/saintvitus2.jpg" alt="" //p p align="right"strongPhoto:/strong a href="http://www.josefsudek.net/"Josef Sudek/a (1896–1976), from the portfolio emSvàty Vit/em (1928)/p pSudek’s well known passion for music greatly inspired his work. Especially Mozart, Smetana, Dvořák and Janáček (to whom he even devoted his last project) were composers he deeply admired and according to his own words showed up in his work like a reflection in a mirror. For this post however I’ve made a playlist with my own personal interpretation of this specific series on the St. Vitus Cathedral. The sense of timelessness and romanticism that is so profoundly conveyed by these photographs was my guidance for compiling this playlist, which draws heavily on the timbre of the organ, minimalism and drone principles. As if the rays of sunlight piercing through the cathedral were translated into music./p pOne of my favourite pieces of minimalism is Charlemagne Palestine’s emSchlongo!!!daLUVdrone/em, a meditative magnum opus on solo pipe organ that creates a symphony of overtones and perfectly sets the mood for the rest of the mix. Palestine’s unconventional methods of playing on the church pipe organ involves putting pieces of paper between the keys to hold them down in order to create an overwhelming whirlpool of sonority. At first it might sound motionless but the longer you listen the more details there are exposed, eventually revealing a complex structure of overtones swirling together. The piece as presented on CD is a 75 minute fragment of the original three-hour performance on Valentine’s Day 1998, which is not very practical for this playlist so it’s featured here as a 15 minute excerpt. Still plenty to get drowned in and to set the right tone for this mix./p pThe sound of the organ is extended throughout the subsequent two pieces until we reach Danish sound artist Jacob Kirkegaard’s piece of sonic time layering. Inspired by Alvin Lucier’s groundbreaking work emI Am Sitting in a Room/em, Jacob recorded silence in four rooms in and around Chernobyl. He then played back those recordings of silence in the same rooms, which he again recorded. Repeating this process up to ten times eventually created a multi-layered drone, different for each room, that is not only interesting on a conceptual level but also musically engrossing. Kirkegaard’s piece of silence-put-to-sound effortlessly blends into the exquisite tape manipulations and field recordings of Graham Lambkin and Jason Lescalleet. Even the most pop-oriented listener will find beauty in this wonderful composition after having ventured the preceding thirty-five minutes of organ drones and ambient recordings./p pRoughly five minutes into their piece the delicate remains of a choir are subtly incorporated into the recording which forms a natural introduction for the subsequent piece, a choral work of Estonian composer Arvo Pärt. Eventually the mix comes to a halt with the Icelandic drones of Hildur Gudnadóttir, BJ Nilsen and Stilluppsteypa. Named after the Buddhist shrine in Kandy, Sri Lanka, this composition mixes together cello drones, field recordings and electronics. Perfectly paying tribute to the spiritual elements contained in Sudek’s photographs of the St. Vitus Cathedral./p p align="center"emIf you take photography seriously you must also get interested in another art form. For me it is music. This listening to music shows up in my work like a reflection in a mirror. I relax and the world looks less unpleasant, and I can see that all around there is beauty, such as music./em/p p align="right"~ Josef Sudek ~/p ol listrongCharlemagne Palestine/strong - a href="http://www.moteldemoka.com/bubbachups/01_Schlongo.mp3"Schlongo!!!daLUVdrone (excerpt)/abr / em Schlongo!daLUVdrone (Solo Pipe Organ) (Organ of Corti, 2000)/em/li listrongEluvium/strong - a href="http://www.moteldemoka.com/bubbachups/10_Ostinato.mp3"Ostinato/abr / em Copia (Temporary Residence, 2007)/em/li listrongWinter Family/strong - a href="http://www.moteldemoka.com/bubbachups/03_So_Soon.mp3"So Soon/abr / em Winter Family (Sub Rosa, 2007)/em/li listrongJacob Kirkegaard/strong - a href="http://www.moteldemoka.com/bubbachups/01_Church.mp3"Church/abr / em 4 Rooms (Touch, 2006)/em/li listrongGraham Lambkin / Jason Lescalleet/strong - a href="http://www.moteldemoka.com/bubbachups/01_Listen_the_Snow_is_Falling.mp3"Listen the Snow is Falling/abr / em The Breadwinner (Erstwhile, 2008)/em/li listrongArvo Pärt/strong - a href="http://www.moteldemoka.com/bubbachups/03_Magnificat.mp3"Magnificat/abr / em Te Deum (ECM, 1993)/em/li listrongStephan Mathieu/strong - a href="http://www.moteldemoka.com/bubbachups/04_Promenade.mp3"Promenade/abr / em Radioland (Die Schachtel, 2008)/em/li listrongMachinefabriek/strong - a href="http://www.moteldemoka.com/bubbachups/05_Wintervacht.mp3"Wintervacht/abr / em Stottermuziek (Self released, 2006)/em/li listrongHildur Gudnadóttir, BJ Nilsen and Stilluppsteypa/strong - a href="http://www.moteldemoka.com/bubbachups/02_Temple_of_the_Holy_Tooth.mp3"Temple of the Holy Tooth/abr / em Second Childhood (Quecksilber, 2007)/em/li /ol p align="right"a href="http://www.moteldemoka.com/bubbachups/playlists/Shrouded_in_the_Symbiotic_Myste ry_of_Timelessness_and_Romanticism.m3u"emStream playlist/em/abr / a href="http://sharebee.com/6adadef0"emDownload playlist/em/a/p pstrongPreviously featured in this series:/strongbr / - a href="http://www.moteldemoka.com/2008/04/10/is-there-a-way-out-to-paradise/"Is There a Way Out to Paradise?/abr / - a href="http://www.moteldemoka.com/2008/06/09/of-beauty-reminiscing/"Of Beauty Reminiscing/a/p pstrongRecommended reading:/strongbr / a href="http://www.aperture.org/store/books-detail.aspx?ID=260"Josef Sudek: Poet of Prague (Aperture Monograph)/abr / em160 page hardcover including 130 tritone images and essays by Anna Farova/em/p

pAlright, the deployment has just finished and it#8217;s time to highlight some of the most important changes of this week./p pLet me start by traditional note that we fixed another nice set of bugs and annoyances you, our beloved users, were actively reporting during previous iterations (here#8217;s the a href="http://www.blogbridge.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/04/applause.wav"round of applause/a for you). Check out a href="http://www.blogbridge.com/category/history-of-changes/"the list/a to get a better idea of what has changed./p pimg src='http://www.blogbridge.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/04/prefs-tags-pinning.png' alt='Configuring pinned articles tagging' style="float:right; margin: 0 0 20px 20px;"/There#8217;s one very nice feature added, we thought everyone actively using PIN feature would welcome. Now you can configure BlogBridge to strongtag articles you are pinning automatically/strong. I personally, like to use this feature during morning news scanning to mark pieces I would love to get back to and read more carefully later. Certainly, you can find more applications to this addition. To start experimenting, open the Preferences dialog on the Tags page and configure the tagging when pinning with the space-separated list of tags./p p style="clear: both"There#8217;s a nice counterpart for this feature. A couple of hours ago we added a new page to a href="http://www.blogbridge.com/my-blogbridge/"My BlogBridge site/a with the list of all links you tagged in the BlogBridge desktop client. Note that this page shows only the links stored on bour/b server, not del.icio.us (see Preferences / Tags page), so be not surprised to find it empty if you are an avid del.icio.us user. This feature is very fresh though and will grow more soon, so don#8217;t forget to water it with your thoughts regularly./p p style="clear:both"img src='http://www.blogbridge.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/04/prefs-guides-filter.png' alt='Preferences Guides Filter' style="float:left; margin: 0 20px 20px 0;"/A long requested feature #8212; strongHiding Guides without Unread Feeds/strong #8212; is also available for testing. You can find a single filter box on the Preferences / Guides page. Set the color to whatever you like or mark read Guides as hidden and BlogBridge will take care of everything else. It#8217;s very much analogous to what we have for Feeds, and I believe no one will find it difficult to grasp. If you have any further ideas as to what types of Guides could be color coded, make sure to drop us a line. The forum is at your service./p p style="clear: both;"And the last bit of advancement that I have a pleasure to highlight in this brief review is strongPer Feed Article Sorting/strong#8230; You are welcome! I dump my stuff in my room and with a copy of Jay McInerney#8217;s trash novel quot;Story of my Lifequot; in hand, set up shop near the entrance./p pI#8217;ve long found that an air of intellectual pretension, a seeming absorption in a book and a higher cause that picking up chicks is a great way to pick up chicks and encourage wayward lasses to begin conversations with me that they#8217;ll later come to rue./p p(I#8217;m only writing like this because I know it#8217;s what you expect from me #8212; the lowest common denominator #8212; and it#8217;s what I#8217;m most comfortable churning out, but please realize that all this horny blogging is just a metaphor for my love for G-d, Torah and Israel and really has nothing, absolutely nothing at all, nbsp; to do with cheap thrills. I#8217;m ready for a lasting commitment. Ladies, why am I not married?)/p pA cute blonde volunteer sits next to me. She has no choice. I#8217;ve got the good seat. All must pass me. I#8217;m ready to see and be seen./p pJust as I#8217;m about to wave my book around and look fascinating, this old geezer with long white hair plonks down beside her and starts going off about some non-Orthodox day school in Melbourne, Australia./p pBollocks! Foiled again!/p pI decide to broaden my horizons and give the older chicks a chance. Later Friday night, in a strictly hush-hush and off the record conversation with one of Jewish journalism#8217;s leading lights, I find myself using an expression that had never before occured to me: quot;GILF.quot;/p p#8216;Nuff said./p pThere are about 650 attendees. About a third are Orthodox (compared to less than 10% at the last a href="http://www.limmudny.org/"New York Limmud/a). Public space at the conference is kept holy aka shomer mitzvos. It#8217;s nice not having to deal with ringing cell phones and the other detritus of non-Orthodox Jews when I#8217;m trying to have a transcendent experience on my Shabbat with that tiny percentage of Jewry who do things as G-d intended./p pI find nothing disturbs my prayers more than finding used condoms and pork rinds on my way in to shul./p pBeginning with the end in mind, I supplement my Shabbos davening with lengthy selections from a href="http://www.amazon.com/Get-Spiritual-Memoir-Divorce/dp/1558749292"The Get: A Spiritual Memoir of Divorce/a./p pFor the rest of the conference, I strategically carry around quot;a href="http://www.amazon.com/Girls-Gone-Mild-Reclaim-Self-Respect/dp/1400064732"Girls Gone Mild/a.quot; Nothing like using a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wendy_Shalit"Wendy Shalit/a to wicked ends./p pEverybody is nice to me at LimmudLA. Rabbi who normally look away when I pass by now wish me quot;Gut Shabbosquot; and talk to me like I#8217;m a human being./p pIt#8217;s almost enought to make me want to be nice back./p pAn organizer says: quot;I spent most of the conference talking to people in the halls. I was most surprised and fascinated by the utter lack of complaints (OK, except your chanteuse DF#8217;s plea for more Reform/Reconstructionist Jews). Everyone was practically giddy, even people who are usually hard to please.nbsp; It was almost too easygoing. This is not what I#8217;d expect from a Jewish crowd. The most interesting explanation I heard of why people were so happy was that they didn#8217;t feel any pressure to be anywhere or do anything at any point in time, so there was space for them to choose whatever they wanted to, which in turn made them want to go to sessions. We get so suffocated by Jewish institutions wanting our time, money, and attention, that it kills desire.quot;/p pI go to bed about midnight every evening and arise shortly after 7 a.m. In between, I walk around shining as the Bible instructs (light unto the nations and all that)./p pAround 2 a.m. Saturday, a href="http://lukeford.net/blog/?p=2277"my roommate/a stumbles in. He#8217;s documentary filmmaker and social entrepreneur a href="http://www.nextnextentertainment.com/"Todd Daniel Schechter/a./p pWe share our first words and I know they#8217;ll stay with Todd for the rest of his short not-so-observant life./p pI know Todd#8217;s at the conference to get grants for his non-profit, so I talk him up wherever I go./p pquot;Yeah, this is my roomie Todd. He#8217;s a nice guy #8212; when sober#8230; He came wandering into our room at 2 a.m. He#8217;s quite belligerent when drunk. He had three girls with him. I urged him to share#8230;quot;/p pquot;Yeah, this is my roomie Todd. He talks in his sleep. Yeah, at the top of every hour, 3 a.m., 4 a.m., 5 a.m., he screams out the sh#8217;ma. It unnerved me at first but I#8217;ve learned to respect his commitment to the oneness of G-d.quot;/p pNot sure if I did Todd any good, but I got to perform and that#8217;s what#8217;s important./p pOne morning I came out of the shower and announced to Todd, quot;If you work out, you too can have a body like this.quot;/p pDuring a href="http://www.limmudla.org"LimmudLA/a, I become fascinated with the plight Soviet Jewry./p pMy new cause is fueled by one Soviet Jew in particular #8212; a href="http://www.amazon.ca/One-More-Year-Sana-Krasikov/dp/0385524390"author Sana Krasikov/a (a href="http://www.forward.com/authors/sana-krasikov/"the Forward/a, a href="http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/by/sana_krasikov"the Atlantic/a, a href="http://www.newyorker.com/archive/2005/10/03/051003fi_fiction"the New Yorker/a). Perhaps because I was not blogging, I had to find another way to embarrass myself./p pSaturday night, a friend walks out of an elevator./p pAs I#8217;m walking in, he says, quot;I wouldn#8217;t go in there if I were you.quot;/p pIt turns out that somebody has left behind a very rude smell./p pIsn#8217;t there a Torah law against that?/p pMost of my Orthodox friends daven Orthodox but some of them shake it up and take in the more risque and less orthodox offerings (though they were warned by their Orthodox compatriots that this was a desecration of G-d#8217;s name). One Orthodox guy I know deliberately walked around the LimmudLA bare-headed just to see what it felt like./p pOne day I#8217;m going to walk around and just be nice to everyone for 24 hours, just to see what it feels like. I might even wear my kipa./p pOn Sunday morning, actor a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ron_Rifkin"Ron Rifkin/a, 69, talks about his Jewish journeys. So the father who is not Jewish lives in a fancy old age home in New York and he chooses to live there because Jews know how to take care of their own.quot;/p pquot;We#8217;re looking to show Jews in as positive a light as possible, but not in your face, it enhances the story.quot;/p pa href="http://masteragenda.com/cs/lla08/ps/621"Here#8217;s Jill#8217;s bio on the LimmudLA website/a: quot;Jill Cutler is currently President of Winkler Films, Oscar-winning director/producer Irwin Winkler#8217;s production company. From 1991 to 2006, Jill was a motion picture literary agent for Creative Artists Agency. During her time at CAA and Winkler Films, she has worked with some of the most high profile screenwriters, producers and directors in Hollywood.quot;/p pRon Rifkin says he#8217;s been asked to play Shylock about ten times and always refused because quot;I don#8217;t like the way Shakespeare talks about Jews. I know it#8217;s a great play#8230;quot;/p pJosh Molina(?) says: quot;In general, the portrayal of Jews on screen is very positive, with Ari Gold a rare exception. It has something to do with Hollywood being 50% Jewish.quot;/p pRon Rifkin: quot;I don#8217;t know if I agree with you, but I can#8217;t think of examples now.quot;/p pOn the verge of falling asleep, I go upstairs and take a nap./p pI hear great reviews on a href="http://www.yicc.org/rabbi.htm"Rabbi Elazar Muskin/a#8217;s presentation at this time on the history of the yarmulke./p pI meet a bloke named Brent. He has a shaved head and works at EBay. Each time we shake hands, he twists my hand under his, even though I resist. He says it#8217;s a business trick he does to men to establish dominance./p pIt ticks me off. I#8217;m the uber-blogger. Don#8217;t try to dominate me or I#8217;ll blog about you./p pI#8217;m told the session on Arabs and the internet was quot;all porn. It#8217;s good for your image that you skipped it.quot;/p pTalmud Professor a href="http://masteragenda.com/cs/lla08/ps/459"Gail Labovitz/a (she has a Ph.D. and rabbinic ordination from JTS) has a way with titles. I attend her quot;Guerilla Girls of the Talmudquot; class Friday night. She discusses five women in the Talmud who challenge the patriarchy./p pDuring the rest of the sessions we share, I always see this ardent articulate feminist knitting yarmulkes as she engages in the great questions of life./p pa href="http://www.passionmarketing.com/press/"Gary Wexler/a keeps interjecting in all the classes I share with him. It#8217;d be annoying if his points weren#8217;t so smart./p pI catch several sessions with the world#8217;s sexiest grandmother, a href="http://www.harrywalker.com/speakers_template.cfm?Spea_ID=808"Professor Arna Poupko Fisher/a. On Friday afternoon, she wears these long black riding boots and talks about her shopping spree at Barneys./p pShe has her own horse at home in Cincinnati./p pDr. Fisher says a woman came up to her at LimmudLA and said she was amazed at how much she had changed over the past 15 years./p pThen Dr. Fisher was chareidi and married to a rabbi. Now she#8217;s more modern and married to a businessman who became Orthodox for her./p pArna says she got her driver#8217;s license suspended because she got so many tickets. When she eventually got everything under control and was driving under the speed limit, she spotted a cop one day and said, quot;Aren#8217;t you impressed with how I#8217;m driving? I haven#8217;t had any tickets in months.quot;/p pThe cop responded: quot;You#8217;re all we talk about, Dr. Fisher.quot;/p pAt Dr. Fisher#8217;s Sunday afternoon session on Jewish belief, I pop up, quot; With an insignificant number of exceptions, the only people who are going to observe the Torah are those who believe it comes from G-d.quot;/p pThat#8217;s the only religious belief that truly matters. Belief in G-d is not a big deal, notes Dennis Prager. It is whether you believe the Bible comes from G-d. If you do, you#8217;ll take it seriously./p pAll the rest of theology beyond ethical monotheism doesn#8217;t matter much./p pa href="http://www.totallyjewish.com/news/lawton/"Clive Lawton/a is my biggest discovery at LimmudLA. He helped found the UK Limmud in 1980./p pa href="http://www.lukeford.net/Images/photos/clivelawton.wav"Here#8217;s audio of his Saturday night talk/a on quot; What are Jews for?quot;/p pI learn:/p p* That Jewish day schools in Los Angeles are a $150 million per annum business (of which only $120 million are covered by tuition)./p p* I#8217;m told that LimmudLA is less intellectual than LimmudNY. That LimmudLA needs to do more outreach to intellectuals (academics, rabbis and the like) as well as to Persian, Reform and Reconstructionist Jews./p pAt a href="http://www.debbiefriedman.com/"Debbie Friedman/a#8217;s concert Sunday night (I sit next to Rabbi Seidler-Feller), she says before singing her perennial quot;a href="http://www.ritualwell.org/lifecycles/healinghardtimes/healingfromabuse/SongMiSh ebeirach.xml"Mi Shebeirach/aquot; healing prayer, that she wants us to bless each other. We#8217;ll sing the song once together and then we should let her sing it once to us./p pquot; You can#8217;t put out and receive at the same time, quot; she says. quot;If you want to resist something, put out.quot;/p pThere#8217;s widespread laughter./p pIt wasn#8217;t Debbie#8217;s best choice of words./p pMonday morning. I catch Rabbi Chaim Seidler-Feller#8217;s lecture on quot;A Jewish perspective on the relationship between Judaism and Islam.quot;/p pThe rabbi says it is important to dialogue with other religions but it was very difficult to dialogue with Islam. After two years, he gave up./p pquot; To do real dialogue, you have to be able to talk not only about all the good things in your tradition, but you have to be able to talk about the bad things. Masochism is not my way. If I#8217;m going to reveal some of the negatives [about Jews and Judaism], politically, that#8217;s what they#8217;re most interested in, and the Muslim participants sit there absorbing it all and never letting go of themselves, you#8217;re just human. I became resentful and I left./p pquot;I came back to a meeting and told them why I left. Everybody was upset and resentful. There were some good people there#8230;quot;/p pquot;I want you to be able to recognize fundamentalism#8230;[including] in your own community. Thank God our fundamentalists are not militants, some are.quot;/p pquot;Read Commentary this month, the a href="http://www.commentarymagazine.com/viewarticle.cfm/In-Search-of-Moderate-Muslims -11223"article on moderate Muslims/a. It puts a href="http://www.danielpipes.org/"Daniel Pipes/a in his place. Please don#8217;t follow Daniel Pipes. If you follow Daniel Pipes, you are down the road of hopelessness.quot;/p pquot; If we had listened to Daniel Pipes, most probably there would not have been a 9/11./p pquot; So why didn#8217;t we listen to Daniel Pipes? Because you couldn#8217;t. He made everything so bad that no one could believe him.quot;/p pquot; You have to speak a language people can absorb. If you say they are all bad and the only good Muslims are Zionists, no one#8217;s going to believe you. First of all, those Muslims, no one cares about them except Jews. Why do we need Muslims to be Zionists? We need Jews to be Zionists.quot;/p pquot; We need strong Muslims who believe in their cause who we can argue with#8230; I#8217;m not hopeful.quot;/p pquot; The Muslim critics are mostly in the West. Muslim critics are very scared#8230;that they#8217;re going to die.quot;/p pquot;Nietzsche called it a slave morality. We developed our morality in the conditions in which we were oppressed. Therefore, we developed a whole theory about how to deal with those who are vulnerable in society. No empirenbsp; developed a theory about how to deal with those who are oppressed.quot;/p pquot; My teacher and friend Krister Stendahl taught me#8230;that when they (his Harvard students) study [New Testament] texts in their class which are anti-Jewish#8230; Number one. Contextualize. That passage has to do with the First Century. It has nothing to do with Jews today. Number two. If you can, reinterpret those texts.quot;/p pquot;Every religious tradition has baggage.quot;/p pquot; It has to be identified and reinterpreted if possible.quot;/p pquot;We#8217;re supposed to wipe out the seven nations. That#8217;s not a good verse. The worst thing you can do is justify it.quot;/p pquot; One of the reasons for our survival is the interpretative tradition.quot;/p pquot;Stendahl says contextualize, you have to give it some history. History is important. History neutralizes the sense that it is divine ordinance. You have to live on two levels. That you believe it is God#8217;s word and that it has history. Once you historicize something, it gives it a sense of life. It lived in the world. You give it some context. It is not eternal.quot;/p pquot;Second, reinterpret. Third, if you can#8217;t reinterpret, sometimes you have to make a judgment and say that it is immoral. That is very difficult.quot;/p pquot; There is a pre-history of the Koran. The problem is that people who do research about the pre-history of the Koran can get killed because it is God#8217;s word. When you proclaim that something is God#8217;s word, it is a good thing to be moderate. It#8217;s dangerous./p pquot;That#8217;s the story I was going to tell before. When we had a dialogue between Jews and Muslims, and they asked us all to come with a story from our Tradition. I was a wise guy. I chose the story where the [Talmudic] rabbis rejected God#8217;s miracles. The Christians loved it. The Muslims were sitting at the edge. I told myself, good thing this is on Hilgard Avenue. If this were the Middle East#8230;quot;/p pThe rabbi draws his finger under his neck./p pquot;People who do historical studies on the Koran are taking their lives into their hands. This guy wrote a Ph.D. at the University of Cairo on the literary analysis of the Koran and they rejected his Ph.D. and they made sure that his professor could not teach again.quot;/p pquot; They have a very bad problem. We can#8217;t work it out for them. We suffer for their problem. When I debate with Muslims, I talk about this. What right do I have to be critical of Islam? I say, I#8217;m suffering for the things they#8217;re teaching. I#8217;m going to talk about it. It#8217;s no longer theoretical.quot;/p pThe rabbi gives me permission to put his speech online./p pOn the last session Monday, I catch the play quot;a href="http://www.curtainup.com/modernorthodox.html"Modern Orthodox/a.quot; It is more modern than orthodox, filled with sex talk and steamy kissing, yet several parents, including Orthodox parents, have no problem with their small children taking in this deviant hump-filled performance./p pI wish my conscience wasn#8217;t so exquisite or I wouldn#8217;t be bothered by such things./p pLeaving LimmudLA, I#8217;m at such a height of holiness that it verges on the impossible for any woman to view me as an erotic object. It#8217;s a small price to pay for being Your Moral Leader./p pI offer Todd Schechter a ride to Los Angeles but warn him he#8217;ll have to sit in the back. I don#8217;t describe my van and the fact that there are no seats in the back./p pSo, Monday afternoon, I#8217;m walking to my van with my friend Michal and Todd. We throw his stuff in the back. He looks in and sees with horror there are no seats. Only a grim iron mess. He turns green and mentions he had a bad experience in a van./p pNot sure if some bad man picked him up in one when he was at a tender age and forced him to do things against the strict instruction of Leviticus. Todd does not elaborate./p pHe wonders how long a drive it is to L.A./p pI figure if I tell him the truth, he won#8217;t get in, so I lie and say quot;45 minutes.quot;/p pI know this is against the Torah but it#8217;s jolly fun for me./p pTodd clambers in reluctantly and for the next hour and a half I get my jollies at his expense, swerving all over the road, commenting on how quot;the brakes seem to be working todayquot; and singing a href="http://www.ritualwell.org/lifecycles/healinghardtimes/healingfromabuse/SongMiSh ebeirach.xml"Debbie Friedman#8217;s quot;Mi Shebeirachquot;/a number until both Michal and Todd want to end their miserable existences and go on to the True World./p pAround LAX, Todd confesses he#8217;s nauseous. I tell him to give us a heads up before he chunders so Michal can videotape him./p pThat makes Todd go all up stubborn and stiff upper lipish though when I finally dump him out in Brentwood at the Coffee Bean and drive away, I imagine he collapsed in a heap and initiated his first personal relationship with G-d./p pIt#8217;s the worst car ride in the life of this Horace Mann graduate (except perhaps with the mythical bad man who coulda touched him inappropriately and driven him to become a quot;social entrepreneurquot;)./p pPerhaps I never let him out of my van? a href="http://www.lukeford.net/Images/photos4/080212/121.htm"Here are/a a href="http://www.lukeford.net/Images/photos4/080212/122.htm"the last/a a href="http://www.lukeford.net/Images/photos4/080212/123.htm"known pictures/a of a href="http://www.lukeford.net/Images/photos4/080212/124.htm"Todd Daniel Schechter/a still alive.
